Assessing the effectiveness and impact of a project, programme or initiative is of critical importance for policy makers, funders and providers/practitioners, in order to help them understand what works and what does not work.

This process is an essential element in informing the further development and adaptation of programme or project delivery for the benefit of the community or communities the initiative is designed to support. Not only is this desirable, but it is, almost without exception, a requirement of funding bodies.
