Michael Horton
Cambodian Project Director

Michael Horton

Michael Horton’s key interests include sustainable agriculture, community and social development, food security and environmentally responsible tourism development.

Michael has spent over ten years managing development projects across Europe and South East Asia for a wide range of clients including international organisations, educational establishments, private enterprises, government ministries and non-governmental organisations (NGOs). For many years he worked on emerging technology adoption projects, including those aimed at agriculture, education, food production and processing, the financial sector, and, in recent years, tourism and environmentally sustainable economic growth.

Michael has lived and worked in Cambodia since early 2006. As Cambodian Director of AardvarkFieldfare, his responsibilities include business development, project design and preparation, project and financial management. He also liaises with government departments, private businesses, funding bodies and NGOs regarding the development of environmental initiatives and the improvement of environmental standards across Cambodia.  This includes environmental awareness raising activities such as organising and delivering seminars, workshops, and training events.

He was co-organiser and keynote speaker at a recent UNESCO/APSARA workshop, focusing on public/private partnership on water and waste water treatment and re-use, at Siem Reap, Cambodia, in relation to the tourism sector.  This work is ongoing and now involves the Minister for Tourism, looking at initiatives to improve environmental impact assessment procedures for new builds, water treatment requirements for new builds, existing businesses, and options for domestic properties.  In addition, work is progressing on the establishment of a public/private forum and working group on water issues, which will help to address the pressing and complex environmental needs in Siem Reap. The results will also feed into the forthcoming Royal Decree on Water and Waste Water Management.

Current projects focus on environmental issues, including: water and waste water treatments, energy from waste, renewable energy, environmentally sustainable economic development, especially tourism, environmental education and awareness. Michael is working with EDW on the development of a youth enterprise centre on the site of the Cambodian orphanage at Siem Reap.
